It is with a sorrowful spirit that we announce the passing to glory on October 12, 2010, of our beloved Apostle Dr. Betty P. Peebles, Senior Pastor of the Jericho City of Praise, in Landover, Maryland. Apostle Peebles was 76 years of age – she had just celebrated a birthday on October 5, 2010. She passed in a small community hospital in Maryland, where family and friends gathered to be with her in the final moments of her earthly life.
Apostle Peebles was born in Columbia Hospital for Women, Washington, D.C. Her elementary education began in the DC Public School System (a graduate of Cardoza High School); then on to Howard University where she received a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting Finance; a Masters degree in Divinity; and a Doctorate of Divinity from Wilbur Waters School of Divinity.
Apostle Peebles has served the Jericho Ministries, and the body of Christ with tremendous passion, strength and love for over forty one years; the ministry has a membership of over 15,000. Her commitment to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ has fostered the salvation of thousands of lives and made an indelible impact in all regions of the world.
Apostle Peebles continued the vision of her late husband Bishop James R. Peebles, Sr. to build a ministry that would represent the heart of God for the people of this land. The fruition of that vision includes the Main Sanctuary that seats over 10,000; the James R. Peebles, Jr. Chapel; the Jericho Administration Building; the Jericho Christian College; and the Jericho Christian Academy – that portion of the vision was paid in full in 2005. Extensions of the vision include the Jericho Business Centre, the Jericho Center of Hope, the Jericho Youth Center, and the Jericho Residences – a 270 luxury active adult community in Landover Maryland that sets a higher standard of living for the senior population in Prince George’s County.
Apostle Peebles is survived by her son Elder Joel R. Peebles, Sr., who serves as Assistant Pastor of the Jericho City of Praise; and a host of other family, and friends. She adopted each and every one of her members as her children – and was affectionately referred to as “Mom Betty”. She will be greatly missed. If there had to be one thing that would most help the world to understand
her legacy – it would be her statement – her message; that she was “Performing for an Audience of One” – and that One is the Lord God Almighty Himself. She was always careful to give Him credit for what she achieved in life – she ended all of her conversations with “To God Be All The Glory!
Her family thanks all for the prayers and love they have shown during this hour. "For we know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."
